Is there any second-hand bookshop in your place?, have you ever gone there?. Well, second-hand bookshop is a nice place for you who has limited budget to buy a new expensive books. It provides various books, novels, comics, magazines or posters. As for me, second-hand bookshop is a real heaven. We can still do bargaining and you sometimes can find a really cheap price for a piles of magazines or books. 

I often visit one of second-hand bookshop in my small town. I love that place because provides me some English magazines. Only by RP.5000,- I can collect my favorite magazine. Often the magazine I bought is still in good shape, like the new one. 

My English magazine collections are about 25 and 5 old novel from 1972s. I've been collecting second-hand magazines since 2010, but I found it is hard to find second-hand bookshop which sells English materials in my town. 

Here, some good things of buying English material from second-hand bookshop.

• It is cheap and affordable for us
• It is fun, except the dust. Finding good books in second-hand bookshop is like an adventure.
• If you are lucky, you can find rare and unique books (it is like finding a treasure in the piles the dusty books).
• You can still be able to bargain. 
• Again, you can also sometimes find some bonus in your searching, like poster, CD's, pins, etc.
• etc.

Are you ready to race to second-hand bookshop now? don't forget to bring your nose mask. 

Remember, if you have guts to learn English, I am sure you'll find a way to learn it well. Buying English books, magazines or English novels at second-hand bookshop is one way to show that you are really serious in learning English.

Some Good Books for You, my EFL Friends

Talking about interesting books to read, it's time for me to share some recommended book for you.

Let's start with Grammar books.

• Basic English Grammar (Beginner), Fundamental English Grammar (Intermediate), and Understanding and Using English Grammar (Advance) by Betty Azar are the first recommended grammar books. I can say that these Grammar books are the soul of all grammar books ever. If you want to learn grammar, these books are the most suitable for you. Those are completed with simple explanations, many examples and also various exercises that can hone your Grammar ability. 

Reading Books.

• Steps to Academic Reading 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 by Jean Zukowski/Faust . Those are really great reading books I'm told. In every levels you can find out many interesting texts with many exercises, e.g scanning, skimming, context clues, understanding sequences, vocabulary drilling, Idioms, details, etc.Unfortunately, I have Step to Academic Reading 3. It is so marvelous book for me. 

Writing Books.

• Writing Academic English by Alice Oshima and Ann Hogue. This book is so good to improve your writing ability. It provides simple explanation for us EFL learners and also it provides some examples in every chapter. I use this book in sharpening my English and I just have the third edition only. 

Speaking Books

• Person to Person: Communicative Speaking and Listening Skills, 1, 2 , and 3 by Jack C. Richard et al. I used to have these books when I was in the first semester. These books are really great, I really suggest you to have them. The contents are completed by pictures. They also provide some nice and simple explanation, they also provide good example, tell us the manner how to use formal and informal language too, two thumbs up! 

Listening Books

•  I do not have any listening books, but I can give you some interesting listening materials that you can directly download at British Council, or just search on Google search engine by typing listening podcast and scripts. A hundred listening comprehension MP3s can be found there.If you have ones, let's share to me and everyone.

Smart Choice for Reading Materials

Choose me right, you pal.

Maybe you find that reading is sometimes a boring activity. This happens because you do not find the right reading material for you. As the same fact that is faced by my Friend Doni Arisandy, he also mentioned that reading is not fun sometimes. Here, we will look for some ways how to choose the right reading books or material for you.
Finding the perfect reading materials or books is like finding the perfect soul-mate, if you feel that the materials or books are not suitable for you, you can exchange them. Remember the last discussion? I mentioned that smart choice is everything. Now, here are some consideration for you about how to choose the perfect books or material for your reading. 
•    Make sure you have great interest in book you want to read. It can at least overcome your saturation. Choose the books you are really dying to read.
•    Pick up the right level of book for you. Sometimes the book you read is for advance level, but you are in intermediate level. It must be hard for you to understand the content of the book. So, try to find out whether the book is suitable for your level. Some books give preferences at the back cover, it says bout what level the book is for.
•    Try to read the synopsis of the book. It can help you to give a general and brief point of view of the book. It can help you to find the book you like to read.
•    Look at the content briefly,. You can do scanning first if it possible .
•    Ask your friends about some books that suitable for you. It is also important to ask someone to recommend what books are good for you.
•    You can also go online and find some references there. Find a site which gives you some books references.
•    If you go to the book stores, try to ask the clerk what books are recommended to the reader.
•    Look at book closely, is there any "best seller" sign, or how many times the books have printed.  
•    etc.
Those are some tips for my EFL friends who want to find out the suitable book to read. The tips is not only for you who wants to choose English materials, but also other books. At last, happy reading dude.

Internet Gives You Reading Material

It's time for e-Book.

Talking about good books for your own collection or you just need them as resources in finishing your paper or theses?, I am sure you do. If you are quite sharp, you can find almost of the book you want to find out.  Especially English books, there are a thousands English book for you available in the internet. If you've got much dead president, you can log on to some online shop to buy the books you want. Yet, it becomes a problem if you do not have much money for that. Don't be sad, there are many website that can give you many interesting free books. We occasionally call the book from the internet as e-book or electronic books. Just type free e-book at search engine like Google, and here they are, some sites can give you them for free. 

If you think it is hard to find a true book. As another alternative, you can use journal, or article as the replacement of the true book. Let me make it a little bit straight here by an example, here it is. As an example when you want to find out some books about TOEFL in the internet, but mostly you find some sites that offer you to buy Barron TOEFL or Cliff's TOEFL. However, in that case, you do not have any money at all, but you really want to learn TOEFL, will you give up already? I hope not. Just think far pal, and my suggestion to you, just keep searching and try to find out another way to get free lesson about TOEFL.

Improve Your English by Reading

Do you like reading?, Reading is fun and an interesting hobby, besides  by reading, we can add our knowledge. Reading is also a flexible activities, we can read everything, everywhere and every time. You can read various books available in the library, just visit the library and read some books there. You can also go to book or comic rental to read. Don't you think that reading can also be done while you are going downtown? Yup! when you see the ads or banners on the street, it is also called reading.

Many people said that reading is related to the long sentences. Yet, reading a sign, ads or banners on the streets or shop widows is also called reading. Sometimes we ignored something small that we pass by, but from this simple thing, like ads or leaflet can also improve your vocabulary.I remembered one story of my friend, she practiced her English by writing down many new vocabulary she got when she read advertisement on the way she went home. See, a small thing can be a great thing.  

Well, you can also go online and download various reading material for free. Just search in the searching machine like Google and type Reading material, viola! in no time you will get many interesting website for reading. The next thing you can try is visiting some comic website, reading comic is way fun and attractive to improve your English.


It also goes without saying that reading is the way to get ourselves rich. Maybe some of you ask why it is so. Here's the thing, reading can open your mind to think. Reading sometimes provides you some positive energy to move forward, open your heart and gives you enlightenment.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Let's speak English.

Mirror! Speak to me.

Do you have a big mirror? if you do not have, try to buy one. Why? because you can use this thing to improve your speaking ability. Gee! Practicing speaking in front of the mirror is a brilliant idea, speaking by seeing your own reflection in front of the mirror is also fun. How could it be? Now let's see what fun parts of practicing your speaking in front of the mirror. 

•  You can see your own lips movements when you are speaking. By this thing you can know how you pronounce your English. If you get wrong then you can check your dictionary and then fix your pronunciation.
• You can practice to do eyes contact when your are speaking. Remember, eyes contact is important in communication.
• By practicing your English in front of the mirror, you can memorize something fast, e.g speech, .
• You can practice to use your gesture and mime. These are also important parts in communication. 
• You can build your own confidence. 
• etc.

Those are what a mirror can do for you. So, do not waste your time worshiping your own reflection only, let's get something better then.

You know what they say, practices make perfect and let the Mirror tell you how good your English is because mirror is a good friend and never tells lie to you, mirror is the best friend after all.

YouTube helps your English

Where can I find Speaking English videos?, I am sure most of you are curious to find those attractive videos for your English, and now, I'll spill the beans.

Some websites provides Speaking English videos, but you have to pay for those videos. But don't worry, be happy, a hundreds English videos are available in YouTube. You can watch them for free, or you can download the videos, but you need to install special application to download them. The qualities of the videos are not always good, but it is not a problem. You can still listen and watch them all.

English Videos for Your Perfect Englsih

We've been juggling around movies previous days. It is time to move on now. Well, I'd like to discuss about a great way in improving your speaking ability. Besides watching movie, cartoon and TV series, you can also sharpen your speaking ability by some English videos. I tell you this, you can find out many videos in the internet and Yay! some are free for you. Just clinks some links, and Viola! you can download all them without burning your pocket. You may be asking where you can find the out, but Do not so hasty, let's talk them one by one later.

English videos is a really good medicine for you who needs authentic material for speaking. If you get trouble to find real native speakers in your town (I found this hard to find native speaker in Bengkulu), English video can be the cure. Those videos can be used as an alternative supplement or emplacement of the real native speaker. Just watch the videos you want to learn, and enjoy the virtual native speaker in your screen. So, do not be so sad when you cannot find the real native ones. The English videos can be a really nice partner to speak English.  Again, a hundred of English videos are available for you.

So, it is good starting point to study English in better way. Use the technology as a medium in learning English. Last, but not least, practice your English you've just got from the English videos in your conversation. Practicing your English is all you need.

Hanna Montana for Better English

Talking about some really outstanding TV series that can provide you English, Hanna Montana is the one that I can recommend to you my EFL friends. Why is it so? Nice question. Hanna Montana TV series has nice story lines, it can drag you into laughter. Besides the English conversation is also fabulous, it also sounds natural too.

I also learn about the style of Malibu child, how they go to school, how they treat they parents, and how they make communication among them. 

Hanna Montana is all about fun, I learn so much from this TV series.

Now, let's see some new vocabularies I got from Hanna Montana the series.

• Toodles means goodbye.
• Stay out of it means do not  interfere.
• Make up means being a friend again after a break or problem.
• Tell me about it means I've already known the thing. 
• The best of both worlds means there are advantages for both sides.
• Slick means cute, handsome, or beautiful.
• Get lost in your eyes means fall in love.
• Say what?
• etc.

English Cartoon for All

I am 25 now, but I still love watching cartoons. I sometime find myself staring at TV watching Toppy and Binno, a carton series at one of the private TV station in Indonesia. I also download some Dora the Explorer series. Maybe It sounds peculiar for some, but a small thing like watching Dora the Explorer can help you much in adding your vocabulary.

Watching Barbie sounds so funny for a man, but for me it does not funny at all. As long as the idea is to improve your English, watching barbie is not a big deal. I admit that I used to watch Barbie, and I found it was interesting. I could vary my vocabulary after I watched that cartoon. Besides, Barbie film also taught me good manners how to speak English politely. Just give it try sometimes, I bet you’ll find I mean.

Some of children cartoons also teach us pronunciation, how to spell a letter or word, for example Dora the Explorer, it can give us many vocabularies and also teach us how to pronounce them well.

Next cartoon is The lion king, it is excellent cartoon. It teaches us many moral value, provides us many interesting vocabulary and of course entertains us. You can use this cartoon as a medium in teaching English too. See, you can get many stuff from cartoon.Just find out many great cartoons out there and enjoy the benefits.

At last, just visit some website and check some cartoon you want to watch, or if you have your old collection of the cartoon just play it again and don not miss the learning time.

Do you know Happy Feet, or Finding Nemo? Yap! those are really marvelous animated-movies ever. Learning English by watching some animated movie can be really fun thing to do. You can spend your quality time by enriching yourself with English, new knowledge and information. Since animated movie is mostly dedicated for children, it is safe to watch in every age.

Here are some good points why animated movies are awesome for you.

• It has courteous language. You can use it in your conversation.
• It has many educational values to your life.
• It can enrich your vocabulary.
• It usually has easy and understandable conversation.
• It teaches us manners too.

Some Educative Movies

Good movies, for good people

Even thought the movies I am about to shoot now are goods to watch, you still have to filter them well. Some inappropriate words may appear. I give you some recommended-movies for you dear pal. These are the movies that I've watched before.

• We Bought a Zoo is a really good movies for family. The language used is also good for your English. 
• The Help is a movie from a novel. If you like doing research about Semantics, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics etc, this movie is really good. You can also learn about history.
• A Moment to Remember, this movie is for teenager, but the language used is quite good. It's an old movie but is still fine to watch. 
• The Ultimate Gift is a motivational movie. You can learn the language and the Educational values in the same time. You can be a real thoughtful person after watching this move. 
• Hanna Montana: The Movie. It is good movie too, but the genre is for teenager. Still you can enjoy it.
• Camp Rock is also the good one.
• Three Idiots (find the English subtitles one). This is a rally touchy movies from India. You can learn various educational values here.
• etc.

How to Choose English Movies

Maybe you are asking why we should choose the right movies to improve our English, especially for EFL learners. Here are the answers.

Some English movies have no good moral values or proper languages to learn. Those inappropriate movies can lead your English even worse instead of the good one. I can say this because I have discussed to native speakers that choosing the right movie to learn is important.
Some dirty words can be found in many English movies. We did not filter it and check whether those dirty words are even used in daily conversation. Accidentally, often we use them in our conversation and as the result, we make someone upset. It is OK if you want to know the dirty words, but try not to use it. I think it is not real polite to say them to someone.

Next thing you can do to choose the right English movies are by looking at the guidance, I mean whom the movies are proposed for. You’d better choose the English movies that are dedicated for all ages, or family movie. Besides the language used is appropriate, we can also learn many moral values and cultures there.
Find the movie catalog and watch closely to the movie you want to watch. You can also check in the internet and find the recommended movie for learning English. I am also pretty sure that there are some groups on internet which facilitate some information about good movie to watch.    

You may also ask your English teachers and friends about the movie you watch. If it is possible you can also ask your native friends (if you have ones) about good movies to watch. It is so important for EFL learner to know which movies are right for them because some phenomena I found in my daily life show that most of the students use lines they got from movie without checking whether they are appropriate to use in real conversation or not. They do not even know that the words they used were rude.

In short, You have rights to choose your own English movie, but try to find some movies which have Educational values for you.

Leraning English by Watching Movies

English Flicks are great media in learning English

Everyone likes watching movies, I am pretty sure about this. Besides I do believe that movies, especially English movies can help the EFL learners in improving their English. Am I right?

There are a thousands English movies available out there.They are nice media to sharpen your ability in English, they are also rich of knowledge and information for the watcher. Watching movies sounds like killing two birds with single stone, you are learning English and you give your brain break at the same time. Just go to the DVDs rental and pick up the movies you are dying to watch.

Below are some advantages of watching movies for your English.

• Watching movies can enrich your vocabulary. You may have a piece of paper and write down a new vocabulary you think important in the movie.
• You can also sound like a real native. Just repeat the line how the actors or actress say, snort not sweet child, it will work, especially to some spelling that is wrongly pronounced by EFL learners, e.g. Thought, tough, thirteen, thirty, etc.
• You can also learn how the real natives speak. How they use their gesture, mime etc.
• You can learn about the culture, for instance, table manner, how to greet someone, how they communicate etc.
• You can improve your listening ability. You'll get accustomed to native speakers' speeches by watching movies.
•  You can also learn grammar from the movies your watching. It's so true that you can find out some example for your grammar class.
• You can use some lines in the real conversation and make your word choice better. Besides it will sound awesome. 
• You can get the new idea about your linguistics task. You can even make the movies as an object of your research, for example theses, final report, art class report, or drama class.
• etc.

Hints: 

• You can play the movie over and over again, until you can memorize the words. It sounds crazy, but I apply it.  
• Use the vocabulary you've got in the movie in your writing, or speaking.
• Pay attention to lip movements of the actors or actress. It can help you to understand what they say. 
• Choose the right movie, not all the English movies are good for us (I'll talk this later)
• Don't forget to share your new knowledge you've got from the movie to everyone. This is important.

So, let's watch the movies and get all the good things from them. Do not waste your time watching something unimportant. Re-watch your old movie and make yourself good at English. Have fun!

 

Are You afraid of speaking English?

Confidence is all you need.

Are You afraid of speaking English?, I hope this sentence I am afraid of Speaking English is not available in your dictionary, or if you have one, let's think over that  its sentence should be turned to be I am not afraid to speak English. 

Now, let me share you my experience about my students who are afraid of speaking English, and I put some reasons why they are.

Most of my students said that they are afraid of speaking English. They mentioned various reasons why they are. I try to understand their problems and I do my best to motivate them, since learning English is a process, rushing is no need. Then, my duty is also to encourage them to keep practicing their English, especially they are English teacher candidates, and English is an important part for their future.

I pay much attentions how to give them many opportunities to learn much and persuade them by a number of motivations in order to build their very own encouragement in learning English.

Well, let's see some of their excuse in speaking English.

•  They are afraid of making mistakes. I've told them a thousands time that they do not have to pay anything if they make mistakes in speaking English. Besides English is not our mother tongue, it is not a big deal if you make a mistake.
• They are afraid of being ridiculed. Ridiculing, mocking, or insulting someone who wants to speak English is a real bad habit. Many students of mine feel uncomfortable and give up speaking English because of being ridiculed by other people. Again, I told them that they have to ignore what people say, remember dog's barking, doesn't bite. It is useless to pay attention to what people say. Just keep your chin up and be happy, keep practicing because it will be better .
• They are afraid because of the lack of vocabulary. Imagine, if they just stop talking because they have some vocabulary only, their English will get even worse then. I said, ignored your vocabulary and keep practicing your English. I guarantee, by practicing your English as often as possible, your vocabulary will be rich. 
•  etc.

Those are some reason why they are afraid of speaking English. In short, they are just not confident. Yap! building a confidence is quite tough, but do not give it up easily and get rid of your shyness!. Remember, you are what you think.

English Skills

They belong together.

Hi there!

Have you practiced your English lately?. I hope so.

Which skills do you want to master? Speaking, Listening, Reading, or Writing?. Well, whatever it is, all of English skills are important. I may say that Writing and Speaking are output skills, on the other hand, Reading and Listening are input skill. All skills are connected each other.

You can also learn the other important aspects in English, they are Grammar, Pronunciation, and Vocabulary. Those aspects cannot be separated from the four English skill too. 

Practicing all English skills and aspects is the important thing you have to do. Do you know how?, I bet you know it. You can do various interesting, fun and attractive ways in practicing English. Now, let's have some hints how to improve your ability in English.

• You can read many interesting books,newspapers, magazines or even articles from the internet. Reading is so good stuff to do, by reading you can enrich your vocabulary, expand your knowledge and sharpen your comprehending about the new thing. Read everywhere and every time, trust me your English will be much better this way.
• Watching movie or English program on TV is always fun thing to do. Go to the CD or DVD rental, pick up some English movies. Watch them and write new vocabulary. The English flicks can also make your pronunciation better.Stay tune to English program on TV, it can help you out in improving your English.
• Listening to the English podcast or English program on radio. You can also put some listening exercises inside of your MP3 player, listen to the everyday. It is a good idea, isn't it?
• Do you have a big mirror at home? Use it, speak to your own reflection. It sounds crazy, but trust me It can help your speaking ability.
• Go online. Make some friends of native speakers. Do video conference and chatting with your new native speakers. It is so great thing. 
• Make your own note or diary. Write whatever you want in your diary. Copy down some vocabularies or sentences, practice them in your spare time.
• Top of the top, invite your friend to speak English every single moment. Make a small club of five and discuss some interesting topics. 
• etc.

Those are some hints I could share, I hope they can help all of use in improving our English. Now. what do you think? Where there is a will, there is a way. It all comes to you. Encourage yourself to be a great learner. Do not give up so fast pal! I know you can be really good English learner.

I've got a bunch question to ask, but let's get started with those question above. If your answers were dominated by yes,you've just realized that you need to improve your English, you need to work really hard. Hey! You can be much better than this, I can guarantee. Show me that you can do better, YOU ARE THE KING OR THE QUEEN OF ANYTHING. Boost your energy and move on. Kill the problem you've got and be the best. English is just a piece of cake. I am sure you can handle your problem.

English in Indonesia

Hi pal! 

Even thought English is a foreign language in Indonesia, it took several stories how  It becomes a compulsory subject in our country. It's important to know, you know what they say, out of sight, out of mind.

Maybe some of you do not know that Indonesian's government made Undang-undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 2 Tahun 1989 (Laws of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2,1989) about National Education System, and It is also fallowed by Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 2 Tahun 1990 (The government Regulation Number 28, 1990) about the development of human resources. It is all about the development the qualification of teachers, students and related parties.

In this case, the government also issued the Regulation of Department of Education of Indonesia No. 0487/14/1992 section VIII that the content of this regulation is to give an opportunity for elementary school to add an additional lesson to its curriculum, but under one circumstances that the additional lesson is not against with the goals of national education.

In some region, English is added as an additional lesson at Elementary school.

A very next year, the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture No. 060/U/1993 of February 25, 1993 was aired. It stated that English can be taught at elementary school as additional subject (muatan lokal), and it can be started from 4th grade. 

The following next years English took its part to be a compulsory additional subject at elementary school. Originally, It was firstly begun and brought by West Java Province and since then English is widely taught in every level of study.    

Well, that's how the story begins. It sounds so simple though, but I hope, It can be an eyes-opener to all of you pals, who want to know how English become an important part in our education.

Why English?

No doubt that English is the most spoken language nowadays. Hence, it's called lingua franca, or over 50% people in the world use English as a mean of communication. Realizing this fact, we, all of us need to learn English as a compulsory language, I'm told. Yap! don't wanna leave behind, let's learn English because sooner or later you will find that English is really important. Well, let me give you some simple examples, now let's take a look around you, most of your gadget's instruction is written in English, or when you are walking down town and doing a window shopping, you will find word discount or sale instead of potongan harga in the shop window. You can figure out more example about English by yourselves. 

Talking about the importance of learning English, it sure has many advantages. Okay, I'll stop this chit-chat and move to the serious one. • Wake up now, it is so many opportunities for EFL students to be ambassadors of students exchange, or your national ambassador. English is playing an important part here.
