Reading Purposes

It is always important to notice what kind of reading we are working on. Someone once told me that reading has three purposes.

  • The first one is reading for entertaining. It means that when we read something we are seeking for pleasure thing. You read something because you want to add your knowledge, this type of reading is commonly called as silent reading.
  • The second one is reading for someone. It means that you read something aloud to give information to the someone else. As an example is reading a bed time stories for your little brother or your children. Reading for someone is commonly called as reading aloud. You need to pay attention to this, because reading aloud is diffrent from silent reading. Reading aloud is kind of similar to story telling. You need to pay attention to many aspects of reading aloud, such as intonation, puctuation, mime, emotion, tone, etc. For your information, reading aloud is not as easy as flip your hand.
  • The last one is reading for applying. It means, you can apply what you read. As a real examaple when you go down to street, you see some public notices, they say "don't walk on the grass", "wet paint", "slippery road", etc. When you read those signs you can do what you are supposed to do.

So, now one start to think what reading you are doing.

  • Happy Reading then, bye.
